The Prime Directive: The Prime Directive: a well-known piece of Trek canon which states that Starfleet is not allowed to interfere with the development of alien civilizations, particulary primitive ones who don't yet have awesome starships, even if the intention is to, say, save that civilization from a natural disaster. So, naturally, the first thing we see the Enterprise crew doing in Into Darkness is an attempt to stop a volcano from erupting on a primitive planet, while trying to keep the Enterprise out of sight. Spock, who's in the volcano doing the dirty work, is adamant that the ship not show itself and thus violate the Directive, yet Spock himself seems to be violating it by being in the volcano in the first place. Also, how did the ship get into the ocean on that planet without being detected? Oh well, it's not like details like this have anything to do with one of the single most important principles of the Federation, right?
