Dracula vs. Nosferatu. Dracula won (but Nosferatu survived!)
This was one for the ages. Filmmaker Albin Grau was inspired by folk lore and the story of Dracula, so he set out to make the horror classic Nosferatu. But, Bram Stoker’s estate wouldn’t give him the rights, so he tweaked his script and made the movie anyway. Stoker’s estate filed a suit shortly after the film opened, and succeeded in having it stopped and all copies destroyed. Well, except for one, that eventually turned up in the U.S. From that source, all existing copies were made, and the film went on to be one of the most famous films in history.
