If you’re not so hung up on the superhero angle, and just want to keep up with Fraction’s trademark style of writing, this is your one-stop shop. Sex Criminals is an epic experiment that is almost impossible to sum up in a tagline. Basically: Two people realize they can freeze time when they have sex, so they naturally use that ability to rob a bank. Yes, it sounds insane — but it works. Somuch. It’s an Eisner Award Winner for best new series in 2014, and shows just how much the medium of comic books has evolved. It’s a touching, practical, hilarious and just plain fun ‘book.
Not surprisingly, Fraction told Complex the concept started out almost as a joke — and they never expected it to go anywhere. But after they broke the first issue and found the heart of the story, they realized they’d hit on something with staying power:
”Yeah, we didn’t have like a 69-issue outline or anything like that. We didn’t have a plan. We were going to do one story—surely it wouldn’t hit. Surely this is a thing that we’re doing to make ourselves laugh. My wife very astutely pointed out that what Jon and Suzy are going through, Chip and I are also going through with the book. Like, when your first love is over and now you have to figure out how to make it a long-lasting relationship. In the writing of the first issue, when it stopped being Jon’s story and started being Suzy’s story, we were able to tap into a whole lot of emotionally truthful material. After the first issue, we realized, ‘Oh, oh, okay. It’s really a love story. It’s really a romance comic, not just a dirty sex comedy.’”
It’s an unorthodox comic, no question, and might be a stretch if you’re coming from a background that’s strictly superhero-based. But trust us, it’s worth the time.
