Episode 801: "Deep Breath"
Written by Steven Moffat.
This feature-length opening episode will mainly take place in Victorian London and will feature the return of our beloved Paternoster Gang. Peter Capaldi's Doctor -- whom we are told will be an older, trickier and FIERCER Doctor -- will get to face a T-Rex, Droids, and a villainous cyborg while his companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) will try to deal with the, um, changes in her BFF.
About the premiere, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat says: "We can push that Doctor a bit further if you've got a familiar world around him. I think the fun story will be – and we have the opportunity here – is this is what regeneration can do to you. He can be very, very different." Moffat later added: "Now it's time for the old beast to snarl at you for a bit!"
This episode will also feature a cameo appearance by Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. Geronimo!
This is the episode's official synopsis:
"The TARDIS crashes back down to Earth, and the new Doctor is taken into the care of his friends, Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax. But there is also a new terror luring on the streets of Victorian London – a sinister half-faced man, who is definitely not local…"
Here are some quotes from "Deep Breath":
Clara: You said renewed. He doesn't look renewed, he looks...older.
Vastra: Did you think he was young?
Clara: He looked young.
Vastra: He looked like your dashing young gentleman friend. Your lover, even.
Clara: Shut up!
Vastra: But he is the Doctor. He has walked this universe for centuries untold, and seen stars fall to dust. You might as well flirt with a mountain range.
Steven Moffat had also this to say about the villain the Doctor will face: "I wanted something quite simple because it's not really about the menace, and I wanted there to be some sort of echo; as a newly regenerated Doctor, he's meeting a man who's constantly rebuilding himself and can't really remember why. There's stuff to play with there. You want an opportunity to be creepy, and exciting, and fun, without having to get into too much of a worry about what the monsters are actually planning. Who was that Prisoner Zero anyway?"
