Donnie Darko features a plane crashing into a teen's bedroom, which ultimately threatens the entire universe. This film had the unfortunate luck of being in theaters one week after the September 11th disaster, which featured a similar airplane crash setup, only intrinsically more horrifying. Donnie Darko barely topped $100,000 during its first week in theaters, but went on to make over $10 million on DVD. It's interesting how real life tragedies can dismally affect similar films, yet expected tragedies that don't happen (2012, Y2K, asteroid hitting the Earth, etc.) can become a film's main draw.
