These six strange Star Wars-themed Japanese commercials for the electronics giant Panasonic are a blast from the past straight into a state of Zen-like surrealism. Produced in 1987 for the 10th anniversary of Star Wars at the height of the camcorder craze, when everyone lugged around a bazooka-sized VHS recording device atop their shoulder taking inane clips that might air on America's Funniest Home Videos, this collection of trippy Panasonic ads showcased quasi-Jedi mysticism with an exploration on the elusive mysteries of creativity.
Never seen here in the United States, there are some sweet shots from the ILM archives showing many of the actual spaceship miniatures, concept art, puppets and original costumes. Just when you think you've seen every possible Star Wars tie-in and crossover ever created, along comes the internet to toss you a bizarrely beautiful gift like these retro advertisements, including one segment with a rare beardless Lucas.
Force open these crazy commercials below and tell us if you're feeling inspired.
