Speculation has been swirling around who would be the person beneath the imposing Ares armor in Patty Jenkins' upcoming Wonder Woman -- with most fingers pointing to Danny Huston (30 Days of Night, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) -- but now the rumor-mongering is finally over. British actor David Thewlis, previously announced as a cast member but whose precise role was still a mystery, will embrace the villainous role of Diana's main adversary.
According to Batman-News, sources are confirming that Harry Potter's Professor Remus Lupin will be unveiled as the God of War using a blend of CGI and practical makeup effects. The tall Shakespearean actor has been seen in nearly 50 films, delivering intense performances in Naked, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Kingdom of Heaven and a rather amusing one in The Big Lebowski.
In January, French magazine Studio Ciné Live dropped the news that Ares was the chief baddie in the film, a scoop that was further cemented when action figure images of the Greek god were seen as part of the new tie-in toy lines.
We're still a few months out before Wonder Woman charges into theaters ... more than enough time for the next wave of trailers to flash Thewlis' visage across the screen, inciting fear and intimidation.
Wonder Woman opens on June 2. What do you think of this Ares casting news?
