It's that time of the year again: The Oscars are upon us (they air live on ABC this Sunday night), but for the most part, horror, sci-fi and fantasy will be almost completely overlooked.
Oh sure, there are always awards for special effects, cinematography and makeup, and every year there is one random genre release that gets elevated into the upper award categories (this year it's the thoroughly deserving Arrival), but plenty of other strong releases and performances that just happen to fall into the category of "genre" get ignored.
Of course, there have also been years when a genre film dominated the Oscars, such as The Silence of the Lambs in 1992 or The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2004. But why sit around waiting for one of those every-decade-or-so events? Below you will find the nominees and, as of today, the winners for Syfy Wire's very own Geek Oscars -- awards for all the work done in our favorite genres this year that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences can't be bothered with.
Congratulations to the winners!
