The Spirit of Vengeance is coming to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when the show returns for a hotly (pun intended) anticipated fourth season in just a few weeks, and we have our first look at the character.
A first official pic of actor Gabriel Luna as the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider has made its way online over the weekend, while Marvel Entertainment has released some “found footage” of the fiery character — or rather, of the awesome muscle car he drives.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Jed Whedon explained that they’ll put their own spin on the character, but also that: “We are staying true to the comics in the places where we feel like it’s really important — we love the character’s family dynamic and the East L.A. kid in him.”
He also discussed the fact that the introduction of Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes at a time where the MCU is branching out into the “strange and unexplained.” Is it time for Doctor Strange yet (Nov. 4)? Here's what Whedon said:
“It started out with a guy building a suit using science, and then we met aliens that are the origin of the myths behind some of our gods, and this year Doctor Strange comes out. We’re opening it up even further to the world of things we don’t totally understand, or as Thor says, ‘Magic is science that we don’t understand.’ Well, we’re getting into some very, very fancy science.”
Executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen also added: “Our team will definitely be trying to science this guy with the flaming skull.”
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. (instead of 9 p.m.) on ABC.
