With the lion's share of Hollywood attention going to the upcoming Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story feature films, it's been easy to forget New Regency's live-action adaptation of Ubisoft's award-winning sci-fi adventure game franchise, Assassin's Creed. Leaping boldly into theaters for the holidays, it's been a quiet contender for the year end box-office crown, and this time-snapping Michael Fassbender showcase wants to remind prospective ticket-buyers that it's an artistic costume drama injected with a dark sci-fi spirit that spent its $200 million budget wisely. A new cover preview in the next issue of Total Film magazine and a wealth of thrilling new images from Fox should help to firmly plant Assassin's Creed 's flag on the must-see map.
Here's the official synopsis:
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
Directed by Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, The Turning), Assassin's Creed opens December 21st and also stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael K. Williams.
