The latest and greatest screen version of Marvel's deadly vigilante is suiting up again in October.
That's the word from Slashfilm, which noticed some interesting information in a tweet sent out on Wednesday (Sept. 21) via the official New York Comic-Con Twitter feed. Jon Bernthal, who made a smashing debut as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Season 2 of the Netflix/Marvel series Daredevil, is scheduled to appear at this year's NYCC, which runs from Oct. 6 to Oct. 9. Here's the tweet:
The part that catches the eye there, of course, is the phrase "Due to his Netflix production schedule ..." which indicates that Bernthal is presumably working again as the Punisher, unless he has some other Netflix project we haven't heard about yet. But if he is getting into Frank Castle mode again, which series is it for?
As Slashfilm notes, the only Netflix/Marvel show currently in front of cameras is Iron Fist, which is shooting in New York, so it's possible that Bernthal could be making an appearance on that program. The other candidates, The Defenders and his own show, are maybe less likely: The Defenders has not begun filming yet (although it's supposed to start before the end of this year) and while it's official that The Punisher is getting his own series, that is not expected to go into production until early 2017.
There's also a fourth possibility: Could the Punisher be showing up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? The ABC series and the Netflix shows exist in the same universe (along with the theatrical movies), but there's been little crossover up to this point. Yes, the tweet specifically mentioned his Netflix schedule, but that could be meant to throw fans off the trail. Imagine if both Ghost Rider and The Punisher wreaked havoc during Season 4 of AoS?
That's actually the most far-fetched theory of them all, but it's fun to ponder nonetheless. I'm betting that he's making a cameo on Iron Fist, while some early work for The Punisher series would be my second choice. What do you think?
