Dolph Lundgren plays demon hunter in bloody trailer for Don't Kill It

Before Dolph Lundgren gets to play the bad guy (again) in the Russia flashbacks of the CW's Arrow when the comic book series returns for Season 5 in a few short weeks, fans of the action star will get to see him play hero in director Mike Mendez’s brand-new horror movie, Don’t Kill It.

Moving away from the big bad spiders of Lavalantula and Big Ass Spider! the new movie gears more toward supernatural horror with some good old-fashioned demonic possession a la Supernatural (those soulless black eyes are pretty much a dead giveaway), and an alcoholic demon hunter played — of course — by the Universal Soldier and The Expendables star. Here’s the premise for the movie:

An ancient evil is unleashed in a small Alaskan town leaving a trail of death and destruction as it passes from host to host. The only hope of survival lies with a grizzled demon hunter (Dolph Lundgren) who has faced this terror before. Together with a reluctant FBI agent he has to figure out how to destroy a demon with the ability to possess its killer.

The movie is set to get its world premiere on Sept. 24 during this weekend’s Fantastic Fest in Texas. Here’s what Mendez told Entertainment Weekly about Lundgren playing against type in the horror movie:

“I think Dolph saw an opportunity to really show a different side of himself. I think there’s more dialog in this movie than all of his films combined in the ’80s and ’90s. He’s got pages, and pages, and pages, of dialog. That really excited him, because he is a smart guy. He’s got a 160 IQ, he’s got a master’s degree in chemical engineering. I think it was really great for him to not play either the crazed psycho, or the silent tough guy, but play a kind of clumsy, backwoods, whiskey-swilling drunkard.”

There’s a whole lot of shotgun action and spraying blood in that trailer, along with a nice dose of humor ("the power of Christ compels you" #rubbertbullets!) and Lundgren doing a pretty decent southern drawl.
