The nightmare returns in new Phantasm: Ravager trailer

The brand-new nightmarish trailer for the final film into the Phantasm movie franchise is here.

Ominously titled Phantasm: Ravager, the fifth and final entry in the long-running horror movie franchise sees the return of Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) and Reggie (Reggie Banister) as they try to put an end to the Tall Man's (the late Angus Scrimm) evil schemes. Also back are Kathy Lester as the Lady in Lavender and Bill Thornbury as Mike’s brother, Jody. Oh, and what's a Phantasm movie without the Tall Man's deadly, flying metallic spheres?

Here’s what writer-director Don Coscarelli (who created the franchise back in 1979 with the first movie) told Entertainment Weekly.

“It’s a swan song to the series. There’s some new iterations of those brain-shucking spheres and a lot of good stuff that the fans will enjoy. It ties up a lot of the storylines and answers some questions that fans have had.”

It’s been a long road for Phantasm: Ravager since the previous movie, Phantasm IV: Oblivion, was released almost 20 years ago in 1998. Coscarelli has been talking about making a new movie since at least 2004 and has been pretty much stuck in various stages of development hell since then. The film was shot secretly between 2012 and 2013, with a first teaser trailer and sneak peek being released back in 2014. The reason why production on the movie was put to a screeching halt was because Coscarelli was working on a 4K restoration of the original Phantasm, now titled Phantasm: Remastered, which will be released the same week as Ravager.

Phantasm: Ravager is directed by David Hartman (Transformers Prime) and was co-written by Hartman and Coscarelli. The film is set to premiere on Sept. 25 at Fantastic Fest and on Oct. 4 on digital HD and VOD, before opening in theaters on Oct. 7.
