Following the news that Taylor Russell has been cast the role of Judy Robinson on Netflix’s upcoming Lost in Space remake, now comes word that the series has found not only its young Will Robinson, but also their father.
Now, first things first. Black Sails star Toby Stephens (who also happens to be the son of Downton Abbey's Dame Maggie Smith) has been cast in the role of astrophysicist Prof. John Robinson, the expedition commander and patriarch of the
Swiss family Robinson. The role was played by Guy Williams in the original 1965-1968 series and by William Hurt in the 1998 film.
As for Will Robinson (of “Danger Will Robinson” fame), the role will be played by Max Jenkins (Sense8, Betrayal). Bill Mumy originated the role in the classic TV series, and the character was portrayed by Jack Johnson in the movie.
The 10-episode sci-fi TV series hails from Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Last Witch Hunter), with Zack Estrin (Prison Break) acting as showrunner. It follows the Robinsons, who are forced to come together when they find themselves stranded light-years away from their intended destination and have to do battle with not only their new alien surroundings, but their personal demons as well.
The 1965 series was set 30 years in the future, in the year 1997, and revolved around an attempt by the U.S. to colonize deep space by sending one single family (that’d be the Robinsons) on a 5 1/2-year journey to another planet. That is, until enemy agent Dr. Zachary Smith (played by Jonathan Harris) sabotages the mission, causing the ship to veer off course and become (ahem) "lost in space."
The Lost in Space remake is slated for a 2018 premiere.
