Next Wolverine film to reportedly introduce Mister Sinister as big bad

We don’t know much about the new Wolverine film, but some sleuthing from the new X-Men: Apocalypse home release might’ve confirmed the film’s villain.

Potential spoilers ahead for the post-credit scene in X-Men Apocalypse!

Cinema Blend reports Simon Kinberg and director Bryan Singer were chatting it up in the recently released Apocalypse commentary, and confirm Mr. Sinister will play a role in 2017’s Wolverine film, directed by James Mangold (and which will be Hugh Jackman's final outing as the character). We already knew the big-screen X-verse would be setting up the Essex Corp., thanks to the post-credit scene in Apocalypse that saw a vial of Wolverine’s Weapon X DNA liberated in an Essex briefcase.

Now, it seems that tease was designed to set up a Mister Sinister appearance in the Wolverine film, as opposed to a future X-Men film (though it stands to reason he could show up in either down the line). This isn’t the first time Fox has used post-credit scenes to set up a spinoff film for its X-Men franchise, and it's worked well for cross-pollination.

As most comic fans are aware, the Essex Corp. is owned by Nathaniel Essex — aka Mister Sinister. The character was first introduced in 1987, and has been a recurring baddie for decades. He most recently popped up in Marvel’s All New, All Different comic universe.

So who will be playing him on screen? Word broke a while back that Richard E. Grant would be playing a “mad scientist” in the Wolverine film, and the educated guess is that he could be Mister Sinister. Of course, that’s just speculation at this point.
