First look at YouTube Red’s Hunger Games, Divergent knockoff The Thinning

We might be easing toward the death of the teen dystopia genre, but YouTube Red is prepping an original film that will keep it around for at least a few more months.

The premium streaming service has debuted a first look at The Thinning, which is set in a near-future where the world is overpopulated and kids have to take a test to determine if they’ll be allowed to move onto the next grade … or be thinned. The first footage is essentially a featurette, including cast interviews and trailer footage. They even name-check The Hunger Games and Divergent, and with good reason, because The Thinning is certainly cut from that same cloth.

The film stars Vine “celeb” Logan Paul and Disney Channel alum Peyton List, which makes sense, considering this thing is constructed from the ground up to appeal to the teen audience.

Considering the next Maze Runner film is delayed until 2018, and Divergent is making an awkward shift to the small screen, it could be the only good option to scratch your teen dystopia itch.

The Thinning hits YouTube Red on Oct. 12.
