Since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story takes place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, it won't come as a complete surprise to anyone that there were strong possibilities characters from either film could put in a cameo appearance in the new movie set in a galaxy far, far away.
Although everyone (including me) expected Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo to show up (for months now, there has been a lot of online buzz that he would make an appearance in director Gareth Edwards' movie, until it was recently shut down by the powers-that-be), it now seems it'll be a prequel character who'll pop up in the movie.
When the new Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sizzle reel was unleashed during the Star Wars Celebration Europe three weeks ago, some eagle-eyed viewers spotted a familiar face they believed to be Jimmy Smits. Fans already know that Smits played Bail Organa, Princess Leia’s adoptive father, in the prequel movies. Meaning in the Rogue One timeline, he's still alive and kicking.
When Smits made an appearance on The Talk, Aisha Tyler asked the actor if it was indeed him who was in the footage. Of course, Smits denied it at first (because Disney snipers, you guys) but eventually confirmed that yes, he’s going to appear in Rogue One.
“No! No.....people got nothing better to do than to look at this little picture? (Laughs) There's stuff going on in the world! Can you say the word cameo? Can you say the words small part? (laughs) Continue (laughs).”
There you have it. So, Smits will reprise his role of Bail Organa in Rogue One. Should be interesting to see what his "small part" will entail. Hopefully, it’ll be a little bit more than just standing around doing, well, nothing.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will open on Dec. 16, 2016.
