Here's our first official look at the U-Wing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Thanks to The Star Wars Show, we finally have our first real look at the new Star Wars universe starship that will carry our group of rebels in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: the U-Wing.

We apparently had our first "secret" glimpse of the Rebel starship set to be introduced in Rogue One when the concept art was shown to the assembled crowd during Star Wars Celebration 2015 (see image above), but this is the first time we have a clear look at the ship.

The U-Wing -- technical name INCOM UT-60D -- is a transport and gunship that boasts some very cool convertible wings. Not only does this fighter vessel drop off troops when needed, but it also provides air support to the heroes of the Rebel Alliance.

According to Matt Martin, Creative Executive Lucasfilm Story Group, the new ship is designed to “bring in rebels to heavy fire zones and get out as quick as possible,” and the video highlights the ship with wings closed and opened. Pretty neat stuff. Check it out below (the U-Wing discussion kicks off at around the 1:25 mark).

Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Wen Jiang and James Earl Jones; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will open on this side of the galaxy on Dec. 16, 2016.

What do you think of the U-Wing design? Are you excited to see it in action?
