Supergirl casts Superman villain Metallo for Season 2

When recent behind-the-scenes pics and videos from the set of The CW’s Supergirl showed Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel battling a Kryptonite-wearing villain, fans started speculating that it was Metallo. They were right.

Entertainment weekly has confirmed that Superman will be facing off against one of his oldest foes and that Frederick Schmidt (Starred Up) will play the role of the supervillain. Schmidt will appear in the first two episodes of the season when Kara Danvers's cousin Clark Kent/Supes will fly into National City.

John Corben, aka Metallo, first appeared in Action Comics back in 1959, but the character has seen quite a few iterations over the years (it's been almost 60 years, after all); however, most of them involved him wearing a Kryptonite-powered suit or cybernetic enhancements.

When international assassin John Corben is badly injured after taking on both Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), he is reborn by a shadow organization into the Kryptonite-powered supervillain Metallo.

The character of Metallo has appeared on the small screen before (I’m talking in live-action form). He was played by Brian Austin Green (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) in Season 9 of Smallville.

New additions for Season 2 also include Lynda Carter as POTUS, Chris Wood as Mon-El, Sharon Leal as Miss Martian, Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor, Ian Gomez as Snapper Carr and Floriana Lima as Maggie Sawyer.

Supergirl will return for a high-flying second season on Monday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m. on The CW.
