Karen Gillan cast in major Jumanji role alongside Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan has nabbed a major role in Sony's remake of Jumanji.

According to Deadline, Gillan will play the part of Martha (no specific details as to the role). Sony has apparently searched for months to find the right actress, and some A-listers (aka major actresses) were considered, but Gillan landed the part because she was the one who gelled the most with the cast, a cast that includes Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Central Intelligence, Fast 8, Doc Savage), Kevin Hart (Central Intelligence), Jack Black (Goosebumps) and Nick Jonas (Kingdom).

The new movie will be more of a reimagining of award-winning writer Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 novel rather than a straight remake of the 1995 movie starring Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst, which was helmed by Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston. Dwayne Johnson has said that it would also pay tribute to the late Robin Williams and his character of Alan Parrish.

Jumanji is only the latest film in a long line of Hollywood remakes, but I have to admit that the combined talents of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Nick Jonas and now Karen Gillan have made my interest in the movie go up a notch.

Directed by Jake Kasdan from a script by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, based on a draft penned by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Jumanji has a July 28, 2017, release date. Filming is slated to begin next month in Honolulu.
