That time Ian McKellen turned down $1.5 million to officiate a wedding as Gandalf

Apparently there are some things Ian McKellen won't do, not even for stupid amounts of money.

The legendary British actor told the U.K.'s Daily Mail (via The Wrap) that he was once offered the astounding fee of $1.5 million to officiate a wedding -- dressed in the tall hat and long robes he wore as Gandalf the Grey.

But McKellen, who played Gandalf in six films -- The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies -- was reluctant to put the costume on a seventh time. He told the Mail:

"I was offered $1.5 million to marry a very famous couple in California, which I would perhaps have considered doing but I had to go dressed as Gandalf. So I said, ‘I am sorry. Gandalf doesn’t do weddings.'"

According to the Mail, the couple in question were tech entrepreneur and Napster co-founder Sean Parker and his bride Alexandra Lenas, who are both apparently massive Tolkien fans: They dropped $10 million on their Middle-earth-themed nuptials in 2013, but sadly for them McKellen as Gandalf was not part of the proceedings.

McKellen has actually officiated at a wedding ceremony before: He presided over the marriage of his dear friend and X-Men sparring partner Patrick Stewart when the latter got hitched in 2013 to Sunny Ozell. I guess Professor X didn't ask his old friend to wear Magneto's helmet and cape while doing so.

Is there anything you wouldn't do -- short of something criminal -- for $1.5 million?
