Ever since it was announced that 15-year-old Riri Williams would be taking over from Tony Stark as the new Iron Man in the fall with Invincible Iron Man #1, fans have been waiting with bated breath to learn which code name the young science prodigy would use.
Cause, you know. You can't very well call her Iron Man. And now, Marvel has decided.
So, will it be Iron Woman, Iron Lady, Iron ... Maiden? Check it out below!
Writer Brian Michael Bendis — who has teamed up with artist Stefano Caselli for the comic title — has revealed that Riri Williams will suit up as Ironheart. Bendis told the good folks at Wired that the code name came about during a group discussion with the comic book editors:
“Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some. Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole. Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story, you’ll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe’s suggestion was.”
Riri Williams enrolled at MIT at 15 and reverse-engineered her own Iron Man suit of armor in her dorm room. It’s unclear whether Tony Stark will have a physical role to play in Riri Williams’ life, but Bendis revealed that Riri’s in-armor A.I. will actually be based on Tony’s personality. Invincible Iron Man editor Tom Breevort said: “Regardless of where he might be physically, he’ll be soaring along with her spiritually.” How cool is that?
Keep an eye out for Riri Williams' first adventures as Ironheart when Invincible Iron Man #1 arrives in comic book stores in November. What do you guys think of the code name Ironheart?
