David Ayer apologizes for saying 'F--- Marvel' during the NYC premiere of Suicide Squad

Things got a little uncomfortable during last night’s New York City premiere of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad when the director introduced his DC film onstage and made a derogatory remark vis-à-vis comic book archnemesis Marvel Comics.

The premiere was attended by some of the movie’s main cast, including Will Smith (Deadshot), Jared Leto (Joker), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Cara Delevigne (Enchantress).

When an over-excited member of the audience yelled “F*ck Marvel!”, Ayer repeated it on stage. Um. M’kay. The whole thing was caught in the short video below:

Ouch! Thankfully, it didn’t take long before the director regretted his (ahem) unfortunate comment. Taking to Twitter to apologize for his slur toward Marvel, Ayer wrote: “Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f*ck Marvel. Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers.”

It’s not the first time DC movie folks have taken a cheap shot toward Marvel. Back in 2015, Aquaman actor Jason Momoa expressed the same sentiment when he wrote “F*ck Marvel” on a fan's poster of the Game of Thrones star as the King of the Seven Seas.
