Looks like the main villain for Jason Momoa’s first solo adventure as Aquaman has finally been revealed. According to a new report over at The Wrap, the King of the Seven Seas will face off against his greatest foe: Black Manta.
The DC Comics supervillain was created in 1967 and is Arthur Curry/Aquaman’s archnemesis. He’s had various origin stories over the years, with the most recent one being in DC’s New 52, where Aquaman accidentally killed Black Manta’s dad in retaliation for a murder the young Black Manta committed. Which leads to his quest for vengeance against the King of Atlantis.
Amanda Waller even tried to recruit Black Manta into the Suicide Squad, and it was rumored the character would be played by Common in the movie until it was debunked. He has no superpowers but actually uses a high-tech suit that gives him enhanced strength and allows him to breathe under water.
So far, Warner Bros. has declined to comment as to Black Manta’s possible debut in the DC Extended Universe, and there are no further details about the role, including who could be playing him.
Set to open on July 27, 2018, Aquaman will be directed by James Wan from a script by Will Beal (Gangster Squad), based on a story by James Wan and DC Entertainment chief Geoff Johns. Along with Momoa, the movie also stars Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) as Vulko and Amber Heard (Drive Angry) as Mera.
Do you think Black Manta would be the perfect villain for the first Aquaman movie? Who would you like to see in the role?
