In case you still don't believe that a film version of The Dark Tower is actually happening, the Man in Black has been spotted on the streets of New York City.
Or rather, Matthew McConaughey as Walter O'Dim, a.k.a. Randall Flagg, a.k.a. the Man in Black. Yes, production on The Dark Tower has set up camp in the Big Apple this week (where it will be through the weekend) and with such a large enterprise and such a recognizable star as McConaughey, it was clearly only a matter of second before someone started snapping photos.
We've already gotten a look at Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger, so feast your eyes on his ancient nemesis:
What do you think? As Collider pointed out in their original story, he's got a somewhat modern look, but a shapeshifter like O'Dim/Flagg may not think twice about adapting his look to his surroundings. It's also good to remember that photos like these are raw in a sense, without the effects, lighting, composition and other elements that go into the finished image we'll see on screen.
Having said that, I think McConaughey looks pretty freaking cool. The black hair is jarring at first, but the man radiates intensity. Having seen him dabble with the supernatural in True Detective, I feel confident that the Oscar-winning actor can capture the unearthly evil that is the Man in Black (and it would be so cool if they went full shared universe and cast McConaughey as Flagg in The Stand as well, if that movie ever gets off the ground).
Lots of lingering questions remain about The Dark Tower, including how many liberties director Nikolaj Arcel is taking with the books and whether it is still being developed as a combination of movies and TV events or just movies (and how many). But based on this and the photos we've seen of Elba in his garb, casting is not an issue.
The Dark Tower arrives on February 17, 2017. If you're in New York City this weekend, keep your eyes peeled (shooting locations below, courtesy of Birth.Movies.Death) -- you may witness the Man in Black fleeing across the city, perhaps with the gunslinger following.
