Watch: IDW's new ROM series to expand Space Knight mythos

The galaxy's greatest Space Knight is back.

ROM #1, which is now in comics shops everywhere, officially reintroduces the legendary Hasbro toy-turned-comic book hero. And while there are a few differences longtime readers will notice with this new iteration of the armored hero from the 1980s Marvel Comics series -- changed mostly necessitated by licensing issues -- certain elements of the ROM mythos remain intact.

In this new series, the silver-armored warrior is still hunting The Dire Wraiths, and he's still feared and hunted by humans who think he's just an evil robot going around disintegrating innocent humans. According to writers Chris Ryall and Christos Gage, they wanted to play up the misunderstood angle of ROM's story to enhance the drama.

Given the enduring popularity of the character, it really shouldn't be that surprising that IDW, which specializes in licensed comic properties, would be the company to rescue ROM from pop culture purgatory.

Blastr talked with Ryall, Gage and artist David Messina at Comic Con about the new series, and about the gargantuan fall company-wide crossover involving all of IDW's Hasbro comic properties, Revolution. It's an event series that promises to link all the iconic Hasbro brands -- Transformers, G.I. Joe, Micronauts, even M.A.S.K. -- in the same universe.
