Legends of Tomorrow will meddle with history, dig into the Justice Society in Season 2

The first season of The CW's Legends of Tomorrow was a big, fun, crazy, ambitious mess and — in its own weird way — it totally worked. But, it sounds like they’ll be shaking up the formula a bit in Season 2.

While speaking with /Film, producers Phil Klemmer and Marc Guggenheim opened up about what fans can expect from the weekly DC team-up series once it returns this fall. They said they’ll be spending more time with each character, even if that means sidelining some others for a week or so. Considering how Season 1 could sometimes get convoluted by trying to cram every character of the huge ensemble into each episode, that’s probably a good move.

They also confirmed Supergirl will be making a cameo at some point (no surprise there), after the series shifts from CBS over to The CW this year. But don’t expect a massive crossover, apparently. They’re cooking up something … else? The execs also said they’d be meddling more in recognizable history this season, while also weaving in a bigger story with the Justice Society of America (after dropping a major tease in the closing moments of Season 1).

Check out some excerpts from their comments below:

Klemmer: “We will be doing these iconic historical moments with recognizable historical figures. To me, we had little things like H.G. Wells and we had a little shoutout to Bill Gates at a certain point. Season two, you’re going to see the icons of the 20th century. You’re going to have those versions of the Forrest Gump kind of moments with our guys trying to fix history but at the same time getting to play a part in these recognizable eras.”

Guggenheim: “We’ve got a cool season long storyline planned with the JSA involving a very cool mystery, involving a big bad for the year. It’s all going to kick off with an epic battle between the Justice Society and the Legends. It’s required that every time there’s more than one superhero in any place at any given time, they have to fight. We’re honoring that rule and that tradition straight out of the gate.”

The bones of a really fun, ambitious show were on display in Season 1 — and when they managed to put it all together — Legends could be one of the most entertaining shows on the air. Here’s hoping they hit more than miss in Year Two.

Legends of Tomorrow returns to The CW on Oct. 13.
