7 amazing actresses who could be the new Rocketeer

Disney's developing a reboot of Joe Johnston's 1991 film, The Rocketeer. The original starred Billy Campbell as the title character, which was based on the comic of the same name. If you're expecting a repeat performance, forget it. The studio plans to swap both the gender and race of the hero.

The new Rocketeer is described as "a young African-American female pilot, who takes up the mantle of Rocketeer in an attempt to stop an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jet-pack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War."

Here are seven talented ladies who'd rock in the role!

Kylie Bunbury

Bunbury's no stranger to changing the status quo. This fall she'll headline the Fox series Pitch, which centers on the first female pitcher in Major League Baseball. Bunbury has a bright future ahead of her, and The Rocketeer could be a part of it.

Samira Wiley

Wiley's best known as Poussey Washington in Orange is the New Black, but this Juilliard grad has much more to offer. After exiting the show in Season 4, she's been picking up jobs left and right. This actress is ready to spread her wings and fly.

Nicole Beharie

I would recommend Nicole Beharie for every role if I could. The former Sleey Hollow star commands your attention whenever she's on the screen. She's bold, beautiful, and more than capable of being The Rocketeer.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell

Have you caught an episode of WGN's Underground? Jurnee Smollett-Bell is a force! If you want an actress who can encapsulate the hero's journey, look no further. She's right here.

Sonequa Martin-Green

Mrs. Martin-Green deserves more screentime... in everything. As Sasha on The Walking Dead, she's proven that she can play strong, conflicted, and vulnerable all at once. She's more than qualified to bring The Rocketeer to life.

Yaya DaCosta

Former model and current star of NBC's Chicago Med, Yaya DaCosta is ready for a big film role. She's had supporting parts in acclaimed dramas like The Kids are All Right and The Butler, but now it's her time to shine. Make it happen Disney!

Teyonah Parris

Teyonah Parris is an Angela Bassett in the making. Her resume includes The Good Wife, Mad Men, and Survivor's Remorse, as well as the films Dear White People and Chi-Raq. She has incredible range and can do it all.
