Looks like Disney and Lucasfilm are planning more than one Han Solo anthology movie starring Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the beloved space rogue.
According to the New York Daily News, the House of Mouse has “quietly” signed the 26-year-old actor to star in not just one but three standalone movies. If Han Solo’s first adventure strikes box-office gold, this solo adventure will become a trilogy of films.
The Star Wars spinoff movie set in a galaxy far, far away chronicling the early adventures of the captain on the Millennium Falcon will be helmed by LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, from a screenplay by the father-and-son duo of Lawrence (The Empire Strikes Back, The Force Awakens) and Jon Kasdan.
An inside source told the NYDN:
“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential. Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters. They feel that his character has the right potential to become a central figure in several movies. They’re keeping things under wraps at the moment, but the deal is that he has signed for at least three movies.”
The fact that Disney signed Ehrenreich for three movies is not that surprising in and of itself. Just look at all the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Marvel Studios is owned by Disney) actors who have signed contracts for three, six and even nine movies! But it’s great to see that their plan is to give us more than one Han Solo adventure down the line.
The Han Solo Star Wars anthology film is slated for a May 25, 2018, release.
