Not to be outdone by Nintendo, Sega is rereleasing the Genesis with all your favorite games

Nintendo created quite a stir by announcing the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) would be getting a rerelease of sorts via the NES Classic Edition — and now Sega has officially fired back.

A new Sega Genesis console will be hitting the market later this year, loaded with 80 games (the NES Classic only includes 30 games, for what it’s worth). The game list runs the gamut from the classic Sonic the Hedgehog catalog to Golden Axe, Phantasy Star, the Mortal Kombat games, Vectorman and Shinobi III. The best part: It also plays original game cartridges, unlike Nintendo’s entry into the retro gaming sphere.

But it’s not all good news. The new console is being manufactured by a third party, AtGames, which has been responsible for some throwback consoles of so-so quality over the years. It also doesn’t have an HDMI connection, which is a travesty in this day and age. The wireless controllers also work via infrared connection, which is pretty awful in execution. Le sigh. Of course, this isn’t the first bundled Genesis to hit the market (they’ve been kicking around discount stores for a few years now), but it is the newest.

Here’s the full game list (not including several mediocre puzzle games also bundled):

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Altered Beast
Arrow Flash
Bonanza Bros.
Chakan: The Forever Man
Columns III
Crack Down
Dr. Robotnik'sMean Bean Machine
ESWAT: City Under Siege
Eternal Champions
Fatal Labyrinth
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Jewel Master
Kid Chameleon
Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 3
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog II
Sonic 3D Blast
Sword of Varmilion
The Ooze
Vectorman II

The console is up for preorder here, and is set to hit shelves in October.
