Marvel's Black Panther: New spin-off from Ta-Nehisi Coates and Roxane Gay coming

Marvel Comics knows a good thing when they see it. This November, the publisher will release a companion series to its highly successful Black Panther run called Black Panther: World of Wakanda. The solo series was written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, who will also contribute to the new book.

World of Wakanda centers on Ayo and Aneka, two lovers and former members of the Dora Milaje, Black Panther's deadly security detail. The story follows them as they fight for a new life outside of Wakanda's rule. Together, they'll form The Midnight Angels, a team of kickass women known for their heavily armored power suits.

Coates will co-write the arc alongside Roxane Gay, which will mark her first entry into the comic book genre. “It’s the most bizarre thing I’ve ever done, and I mean that in the best possible way,” she said. Gay believes World of Wakanda is a very important story with a poignant message. “The opportunity to write black women and queer black women into the Marvel universe, there’s no saying no to that."

The first issue will also include a 10-page story written by Yona Harvey that centers on a mystical woman called Zenzi. She's beautiful, charismatic and dangerous, as her goal is to turn Wakanda's people against T'Challa.

In the past, the comic book industry has been called out for their lack of female writers, specifically women of color. There needs to be diversity both on the page and behind the pen. Colorful characters aren't going to cut it by themselves. World of Wakanda is a definite step in the right direction.
