Starz unleashes a first intense look at Bilquis, the goddess of love, in American Gods

This article contains minor spoilers for American Gods.

After releasing a first official look at Technical Boy (Bruce Langley), Starz is at it again and has unveiled a first look at American Gods’ goddess of love, Aphrodite Venus Bilquis.

As you can see below, our first official look at the ancient goddess Bilquis (also known as Queen Sheba) is pretty intense, and there’s a good reason for that.

Played by Yetide Badaki (Aquarius), Bilquis is “an ancient goddess of love who craves worship and features in the original novel’s most eye-popping sequence.” That particular eye-popping scene features the goddess eating a man with her lady parts. Yep. You read that right. Check it out:

Here’s what show co-creator Bryan Fuller said in a recent interview with Indie Wire:

One of the most amazing sequences for me when I was reading it was the Goddess Bilquis eating a man with her vagina! I think it’s beautifully written in the novel. What I love about how Neil’s laid out that sequence is that you’re in the gentleman caller’s point of view for his climax and the reeling of that. I mean, what is it like to cinematically deliver an orgasm to an audience that . . . more than likely, is not experiencing an orgasm at that moment, although you never know! Being in his point of view in the novel, he comes out of his orgasmic revelry and then he realizes that he’s kind of hanging upside down, chest-deep from her. We plan to deliver that moment as it is written, because I believe that we can, and that’s very exciting for us because we were breaking that story and thinking, we are just going to lift that right out of the book and drop it right into the show. That came up in the Starz meeting, they were like, ‘how are you going to do that moment?’ and we said, ‘we’re going to do it exactly as written’.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed fantasy novel, the upcoming series will center on the brewing war between the old gods and the new. I mean, between the gods from the old myths and the new gods that are modern society’s new obsession: money, drugs, celebrities, media and the like. The story will follow Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling companion to Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), who's actually Odin, on a mission to bring down those new gods.

What do you think of our first look at Bilquis? American Gods will arrive on our TV screens in 2017.
