First official look at Mantis in new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 concept art

The first piece of concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has hit, revealing our first look at the Milano’s newest crew member, Mantis.

The character will be played Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) and lo and behold, she does sport her trademark antennae! She joins our biggest idiots in the galaxy -- Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Rackoon, Drax, Groot (or is it Baby Groot?) -- as well as Yondu and Nebula, in a new spacefaring adventure.

Created by Steve Englehart and Don Heck, Mantis was first introduced in Avengers #112 in 1973. As a child, she was left with the Priests of Pama, a sect of the Kree who believed she was the Celestial Madonna and taught her martial arts. The comic book character possesses psychic abilities that include telepathy, empathy, plant manipulation, astral projection and an accelerated healing factor.

About her appearance in the movie, executive producer Jonathan Schwartz told Entertainment Weekly: “She has never really experienced social interaction. Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”

As for Groot, well, Schwartz teases that he may not be the same Groot we all came to know and love in the first movie, saying, “He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot. He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will open on May 5, 2017. What do you think of our first look at Mantis?
