New footage revealed in behind-the-scenes look at Batgirl in The Killing Joke

Tara Strong is suiting up again for the role of Batgirl in Warner Bros.’ Batman: The Killing Joke, and DC All Access has released a new behind-the-scenes video featuring an interview with the actress and new footage from the eagerly anticipated animated movie.

In the video, Strong discusses returning to the role of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl and working again with Batman voice Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as the Clown Prince of Crime. She also touched upon the dark storyline her character will go through in The Killing Joke.

“I can tell you that in The Killing Joke, Barbara Gordon will not disappoint the fans who have been waiting to see this story. It's completely dark, and she does stuff that she's never done on any series I've ever worked on. So, she's strong and she's older and wiser, but dark. It's really, really a cool place for her to be.”

Fans of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s iconic one-shot graphic novel know that Barbara Gordon is shot and assaulted by the Joker in the comic. The R-rated animated film will expand on that storyline by giving Batgirl a 15-minute prologue to flesh out the character’s arc. When she was asked if she felt the pressure of reprising the role for The Killing Joke, Strong said that she didn't.

“For me when I go into the role I just become that character. You know when you're doing a show on camera, you can see the cameras and you see the scenery around you and sort of forming that visual is easier sometimes than being in a studio and imaging the places you've never been and experience things that you would never experience and just to see it all in your head. I cried in the booth or had serious emotions based on whatever that character’s going through. So when I’m doing it I’m not thinking ‘I hope the fans like it, I hope I can deliver this moment and this scene’ and Batgirl, especially The Killing Joke, it was such a great opportunity to get really dark and serious and be in all of those moments and hopefully the fans will like it.”

Batman: The Killing Joke will be in movie theaters for one night only on July 25 before being released on Digital HD the following day and arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 2.
