Javier Bardem in talks to play Frankenstein in Universal's shared monster universe - UPDATED

Universal Pictures’ shared monster movie universe is about to get bigger.

The studio is circling another big-name actor for the titular role in its Frankenstein movie and, according to Variety, sources have told them that the good folks at Universal are trying to nab Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall) for the main role.

They also claim it’s unclear as of yet when the character will be first introduced, but there are many indications that the good doctor will see him in another movie before going off to headline his own “solo” film.

Bardem was apparently in the running for the role of another doctor -- that of Dr. Jekyll -- in the upcoming Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella as the new mummy. The part of Jekyll ultimately went to Russell Crowe (who may very well get his own spinoff) after Bardem decided to pass on the role. Production on that movie is soon to wrap.

Last summer, Universal Pictures tapped Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan to help create a huge interconnected movie universe a la Marvel from the vault of their classic monster movies. Other films in the works include The Invisible Man, starring Johnny Depp, and possibly Bride of Frankenstein, starring Angelina Jolie. The Wolfman and the Creature From the Black Lagoon are also expected to get their own movies.

UPDATE: Looks like Bardem is set to play the monster rather than Victor Frankenstein. What do you think?
