Doctor Doom to become the Infamous Iron Man in new Marvel Comics series

In the wake of the massive wave tsunami created when Marvel Comics announced that 15-year-old Riri Williams would take over from Tony Stark as Iron Man, now comes word that another Marvel character will also suit up in a new comic series titled Infamous Iron Man.

According to a report over at Comic Book Resources, Infamous Iron Man – written by Brian Michael Bendis, with art by Alex Maleev – will have Marvel supervillain (and Fantastic Four archnemesis) Victor Von Doom, aka Doctor Doom, wear the armor when issue number one hits, in which we'll see “Von Doom seek rehabilitation, following his physical transformation at the end of the 2015 Secret Wars event series.”

Although I’m pretty sure this will generate a lot of unhappy rumblings from longtime fans, this won't be the first time Marvel pulls this kind of stunt (and it won't be the last). In 2013, Spidey villain Otto Octavius became the new wall-crawler in The Superior Spider-Man, a comic that ran for 31 issues from January 2013 and June 2014. The title featured a reformed Octavius, who had taken over Peter Parker’s body, determined to become a better Spider-Man than Peter ever was. The title replaced The Amazing Spider-Man before Peter Parker regained his body and the Spidey mantle.

It also won’t be the first time Marvel will boast various versions of major superheroes headlining separate series. For example: The Amazing Spider-Man with Peter Parker and Spider-Man with Miles Morales; Captain America: Sam Wilson and Captain America: Steve Rogers. Now the original God of Thunder will return in his own series, Unworthy Thor, while current Thor Jane Foster will continue to topline her own series.

Here’s the synopsis for Infamous Iron Man #1:

There is a new Iron Man in town and his name is VICTOR VON DOOM. The greatest villain of the Marvel Universe will try something new. Where Tony Stark failed, Doom will succeed. What is Doom's Master Plan?

What will this mean for Tony Stark when Civil War II is brought to a close? Where does Riri Williams play into this? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

What do you think of Victor Von Doom assuming the mantle of Iron Man in the pages of Infamous Iron Man?
