If you’ve ever wondered what a 13-billion-year-old star sounds like, we finally have an answer. Spoiler warning: It’s a bit strange.
A team of scientists led by Andrea Miglio of the University of Birmingham have put together these recordings of some of the oldest stars in the galaxy by using data from NASA’s Kepler missions. As Gizmodo notes, they did this after measuring the acoustic oscillations of some of the furthest known stars in the Milky Way’s M4 star cluster. Along with sounding cool, this research is also helping scientists develop more precise measurements of star masses and ages.
“The stars we have studied really are living fossils from the time of the formation of our Galaxy, and we now hope be able to unlock the secrets of how spiral galaxies, like our own, formed and evolved,” Miglio said in a statement.
