Joe Quesada confirms rights to Namor, The Sub-Mariner back with Marvel

Breakout the "Welcome Home" banners and balloons!  According to Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, Namor, The Sub-Mariner is now triumphantly back at Marvel Studios after legal entanglements were ironed out to allow the rights to revert back to Marvel.

Quesada splashed this awesome news during a Kevin Smith Fatman on Batman podcast.  There had been speculation as to whether Universal had full or partial control of TV or film adaptations both domestic and foreign, and Marvel President Kevin Feige had often described the issue as "complicated."  Originally sold to Universal Pictures back in 2001, it appears that Subby's rights lapsed last year and it's taken until now to sort out all the contracts and small-print paperwork. Exactly how it was finalized will eventually come to light.

Until then, let's celebrate!

When asked directly by Smith if Marvel had regained ownership and if Sub-Mariner was now an official part of the MCU again, Quesada responded by saying: "I can't speak for studios ... As far as I know, yeah we do. It’s not at Fox, it’s not at Sony ... Yeah."

The Sub-Mariner is one of the oldest characters in the Marvel pantheon and their first original mutant, starting life back in 1939 as the superpowered offspring of a human sea captain and an Atlantean princess. Created by Bill Everett and initially seen in Marvel Comics #1 from Timely Comics (later to be christened Marvel Comics), the enigmatic ocean dweller is one of the crown jewels of comicdom, and news of the character's homecoming is joyous indeed.  Often portrayed as either a nemesis or a colleague, Prince Namor has served time in the lineups of many superhero alliances, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Defenders and the X-Men.

Whether or not the King of Atlantis can be worked into the MCU in a solo film or first introduced in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity Wars isn't known, but where there's a will (and mucho money to be made), there's a way.   What are your reactions to Namor swimming home?

Here's the entire NSFW podcast starring Marvel's Joe Quesada, with his Sub-Mariner comments starting at around 41:00. Beware of Smith's frequent low-flying F-bombs!
