Here's the freedom fighter Forest Whitaker will play in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Hot on the heels of today's character introductions and descriptions for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes word of exactly who the mysterious warrior is that Forest Whitaker will portray.  It's guerrilla freedom fighter Saw Gerrera, from Star Wars: The Clone Wars!   This rebellious soldier was featured in 2012 in Season 5, Episode 2 of the animated series, titled "A War on Two Fronts," in which he and his sister, Steela, battled the Separatist's invading droid army on their home planet of Onderon.  Speculation has been swirling around exactly which character Whitaker would take on, and Clone Wars fans should clap for joy over the news.

This borderline radical fought beside Anakin Skywalker and was a fierce component of a covert, insurgent strike force trained by Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Ahsoka Tano. Saw also has the distinction of being the first character from the Star Wars Animated Universe to make the leap to a live-action movie.

"He's a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists," explained Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in the new issue of EW, "He's on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him."

Since the events of Rogue One unfold 20 years after the galactic stage of Revenge of the Sith, Whitaker’s grizzled, graying Saw Gerrera is now a brutal, battle-beaten survivor who continues to fight the good fight, with extreme measures and tactics if he must.  This is the perfect role for Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland, The Cryng Game), who can display the darker aspects of his acting depths he's so well known for.  Here he'll be depicting a fringe aspect of the rebellion, an older, renegade warrior who remains an unstable associate of the Rebels in their daring Death Star plan heist.

What do you think of Whitaker's role as the combat-scarred Saw, and does this give Rogue One a sharper edge?
