Futurama showrunner prepping Skylanders animated series for Netflix

Along with cranking out award-winning dramas, Netflix is also working hard to appeal to the younger generation — and its latest animated series should certainly do the trick. Have you perhaps heard of Skylanders?

The streaming service has teamed up with Activision Blizzard's film and TV studio to develop the Skylanders video game into an animated series titled Skylanders Academy. According to The Verge, the series will follow the popular characters from the video game and toy franchise as they “travel the vast Skylands universe, protecting it from evil-doers.”

On the creative side, former Futurama showrunner Eric Rogers is producing the series. The voice cast includes more than a few A-listers, such as Justin Long as Spyro, Jonathan Banks as Eruptor, Norm Macdonald as Glumshanks and Ashley Tisdale as the Stealth Elf. The show is slated to debut this fall, with a second season already in the works for 2017.

Skylanders has quietly grown into a juggernaut the past few years, amassing more than $3 billion in sales to date for the toys-to-life (where figurines interact with video games, a la Disney Infinity) franchise. Considering the fan base already established, this show could be a mega-hit for Netflix.
