Stargate director Roland Emmerich says film reboot will retain 'elements' of SG-1

With a big-screen reboot of Stargate in the works from the same team that made the original film, fans are still processing the fact that it’ll essentially wipe out the 10+ years of continuity from Stargate SG-1 and its spinoffs. Well, SG-1 might be gone, but its spirit will apparently live on.

Director Roland Emmerich, who is taking charge of the reboot, told Empire they plan to retain some “elements” from the beloved television series — specifically the ensemble team element that was a major part of the show’s success. It still won't be in the show's continuity (a decision we've already discussed at length), though. He also says they'll be going with a younger team, though Kurt Russell and James Spader could cameo (likely as different characters, we'd guess).

Here’s an excerpt from his comments:

“Elements of it will flow into the reboot, definitely. The amount of characters, for instance. It's not a two-hander like the first one with James Spader and Kurt Russell, this time it's a bigger group. Yes, there's still the James Spader character and the Kurt Russell character, but other people are equally important. James and Kurt won't come back – maybe as cameos – it'll be a younger cast.”

Though Stargate will obviously aim to be a blockbuster in its own right, it still has to do some heavy lifting to appeal to the massive fan contingent out there that loved the various TV shows. Considering Emmerich was never much of a fan of the series (he’d conceived a film trilogy, and the show was made with a different creative team), it’s great to see he’s at least willing to incorporate some pieces of the formula that worked. Jaffa kree! Err, sorry.

The director also shot down a decades-old “myth” that Independence Day began as a sequel to Stargate. Though they both deal with aliens, Emmerich said that was never true, and there was never any “overlap” between the two worlds. So, there you go.

What’s your take on the new Stargate? Can Emmerich revive the franchise?
