Image(s) of the Day: First look at Shadow Moon, Mr. Wednesday and more in American Gods

American Gods 2

The first images from the highly anticipated American Gods TV series have emerged, thanks to the good folks over at Entertainment Weekly, giving us a first look at Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) and Jack’s Crocodile Bar – one of the book’s most iconic settings.

The scene is plucked from early on in the novel, when Shadow has to prove his mettle to Mr. Wednesday in a fistfight against Mad Sweeney, an Irish, quarrelsome drunk leprechaun (yep). About re-creating Jack’s Crocodile Bar for the Starz TV show, showrunner Bryan Fuller had this to say:

“It was one of the sets that we were the most excited about and an opportunity to do a tonal landgrab for what we are and what the style of the show will be. Jack’s] is a kind of hillbilly chic aesthetic for Shadow’s entrée into the world of the gods.”

I don't know about you, but I think the place looks extremely Fuller-like (if you’ve seen Pushing Daisies, you’ll know what I mean). I'm intrigued to see how it’ll actually translate onto the small screen.

As for the dark morbid humor The All-Father Odin, aka Mr. Wednesday, displays in the Neil Gaiman book, Fuller says Ian McShane was perfect for the part (just look at his performance as Al Swearengen on HBO's Deadwood):

“I think the comedy and charm and ease of Wednesday’s appeal is very well-suited for Ian McShane. He has a vibrancy as Wednesday that could have gone so many different ways in other actors’ hands, but has such a specificity and reality, despite the situation at hand.”
