TV THIS WEEK: BrainDead premieres, Orphan Black's finale, and more!

June is always a bit of an odd, in-between month, and as a result we have so few shows this week that our Highlights section is even abbreviated. It won't be long now before summer shows explode on us, but for the moment we're down to a trickle. That doesn't mean there's nothing to watch, though. This week, CBS debuts its new series BrainDeadOrphan Black ends it latest season, and more.

Check out the week in TV below. What's on your watchlist?

BrainDead (CBS) Monday, 10 p.m. - "The Insanity Principle: How Extremism In Politics Is Threatening Democracy in the 21st Century"

Series premiere! - Just when you thought we'd had our fill of zombie shows, along comes this new series from CBS, but it brings with it a fresh approach that you won't see on The Walking DeadBrainDead is set in the tense political environment of Washington D.C., where politicians are apparently being taken over by some kind of "bug" that seems to warp their brains. The immediate satire is obvious, and it's surprisingly timely given the ongoing election cycle. What we don't know yet is just how prescient and incisive the show will end up being, so we'll just have to watch and find out. Check out a preview below.

Orphan Black (BBC) Thursday, 10 p.m. - "From Dancing Mice to Psychopaths"

Season finale! - Over the past four years, Orphan Black has become one of the most acclaimed genre dramas on cable, and it's one of those shows that fans feel never really gets the love it deserves. It took years for star Tatiana Maslany to snag an Emmy nomination for her multiple character work, for example, and though the show's fans are rabid, they're not exactly a huge group. Orphan Black has survived thanks to the fervor of its audience, but like so many shows that thrive on devotion rather than ratings, its future is almost always in doubt. This week, we're staring down the Season 4 finale with no word about a Season 5. Now, that doesn't mean we won't get one, but it is a reminder that Orphan Black is the kind of show championed by an influential few, so its future is never really certain. Check out a preview below.

Penny Dreadful (Showtime) Sunday, 10 p.m. - "The Blessed Dark"

Season finale! - Penny Dreadful arrived as part of a wave of new horror cable series led by shows like American Horror Story that also included hits like The Strain and Salem. It was a clever remix, an attempt to distill classic horror elements that were often disparate into a new kind of story, and so far it's worked. Fans of the show adore it, and it's been a hit for Showtime, but now we're once again on the verge of judgement day for the series. Season 3 is winding down, and we still have no word about a Season 4. That certainly doesn't mean there won't be one, but it does mean that fans have to watch this week's finale while living in fear that it's actually the final episode. Personally, I think there's much more fun to be had with this series, but we'll have to see if the network agrees. Check out a preview below.
