Rumor of the Day: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's villain revealed

Looks like Thor: Ragnarok’s Hela -- the ruler of Hel and Niffleheim, played by Cate Blanchett -- won’t be the only powerful female antagonist Marvel will introduce come next year. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will also have a cosmically powerful female baddie.

According to a report over at JoBlo, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Night Manager) will play the main villain for director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. And that villain will be Ayesha.

The news was first reported by Comic Book Movie back in March, but JoBlo claims its independent sources have confirmed the news. (Still not a confirmation from Marvel, though.) In the Marvel Comics, Ayesha was originally known as Paragon, aka HER, aka Kismet. Basically, she's had a whole bunch of names.

She was created by a group of scientists named The Enclave who were wholly dedicated to taking control of the world by creating perfect genetic beings in order to restart humanity. HER was actually their second attempt since their first attempt, who was called HIM and would later evolve to become Adam Warlock, had escaped The Enclave.

A female replica of Adam Warlock imbued with extensive cosmic powers, Ayesha also escaped in order to seek out Warlock and mate with him so they could start a new perfect race. Since Warlock had died a few years earlier when he traveled into the future to steal his own soul with his Soul Gem, Ayesha believed she could revive him. She managed to restore and reanimate Adam Warlock’s body, but with his mind and soul gone, she was forced to put him back in the grave before setting out to explore the cosmos to find another powerful mate. When Warlock eventually was resurrected body AND soul, he rejected her.

It’ll be interesting to see how much of her origin story will be used for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 considering we’ve heard nothing of Adam Warlock being in the movie … yet. Warlock is much more important in the scheme of things since he possesses one of the Infinity Stones the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) is after in the MCU, the Soul Gem. What do you think?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has wrapped filming and is set for a May 5, 2017, release.
