Mark Millar's Empress comic is heading to the big screen

There's no denying it. Super prolific comic book writer Mark Millar is on a roll. A Hollywood roll. In the wake of selling the movie rights to two of his comics just last week -- that’d be Supercrooks and American Jesus -- Millar will now bring his latest opus, Empress, to the big screen. And it's only one in a loooong list of projects.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Kick-Ass creator has joined forces with producers Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Snow White & the Huntsman) and Jeff Kirschenbaum for the movie adaptation of his latest comic, with F. Scott Frazier (xXx: The Return of Xander Cage) on script duties.

Illustrated by Stuart Immonen and published by Marvel Comics under their Icon Comics imprint, Empress follows the story of the wife of a galactic dictator who decides to leave her evil husband and takes her three children with her. Aided by a bodyguard, she escapes to her home world, but her dictator of a hubby and his armies aren’t about to let her go. The first issue was so popular that it sold out when it hit the shelves in April. Issue #2 drops today. Check out the official synopsis:

Imagine you're married to the worst bad guy from your favorite sci-fi movie. An alien dictator feared throughout the universe, who will kill you if you leave- but you need to escape for the sake of your three children. All you have are your wits, your bodyguard, and three guns. Welcome to EMPRESS, your new favorite comic

The movie adaptation of Empress is reuniting Millar with Kirschenbaum, who was behind Wanted (one of Millar’s early creator-owned comics), the action-packed film starring Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman. Here’s what the producer said:

“Nobody creates universes that translate into big movie ideas better than Millar,” said Kirschenbaum. “With Empress, he's raised the bar yet again. Part Star Wars, part Guardians of the Galaxy and part something wholly fresh that only the amazing brain of Millar could spawn.”

With Mark Millar adding:

“In terms of pure concept, this is the most ambitious story I’ve ever come up with, so it needed the most experienced producers I’ve ever been in business with. Joe Roth is a genuine Hollywood legend and Jeff Kirschenbaum was part of the team that broke every record in the book at Universal last year. Even being on the same poster as these two guys is exciting to me.”

As some of you may already know, Empress isn’t the only Mark Millar comic book to get the Tinseltown movie treatment. Nope! Huck is in the works at Studio 8, Chrononauts (which is awesome, read it) is being developed at Universal, and Fox has nabbed the rights to Starlight (with Simon Kinberg producing), while Warner Bros. got their hands on Nemesis. Oh, and there’s also that Kingsman: The Secret Service sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which is currently filming in London.

It’s pretty freakin' good to be Mark Millar.

Are you excited to see Empress heading to the big screen?
