Space Jam 2 in the works with Star Trek Beyond director and LeBron James

Buzz of a Space Jam 2 starring NBA player LeBron James picked up a lot of steam last summer when the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar and his company, SpringHill Entertainment, signed a deal with Warner Bros. back in July.

And now it looks like the movie is one step closer to shooting some space hoops again.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fast & Furious 6 and Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin, along with Andrew Dodge and Alfredo Botello, has been tapped to write the script for the sequel to the 1996 original movie (yep, it's been 20 years!) starring Michael Jordan, who teamed up with a plethora of Looney Tunes characters in order to play a game of basketball against some big bad alien slavers menacing their freedom.

The movie -- which also starred Bill Murray -- went on to gross $230.4 million worldwide and is considered somewhat of a cult classic. It was also a whole lotta fun, and I’m guessing they’ll stick to the same winning formula for Space Jam 2. You know the saying: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

On top of managing writing duties, Lin will also helm the movie that'll put LeBron James, Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters on the basketball court for what I assume will be more intergalactic cartoon shenanigans.

The report also says not only that Lin will direct but that he’ll produce via his Perfect Storm Entertainment. Sources add that he’ll be deeply involved in the creative development for the new movie.

This is not LeBron James’ first acting gig. The basketball star has appeared in a few productions, starting with a guest spot on Entourage, and he’s recently appeared in the Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck.

As for Justin Lin, he directed four of the Fast & Furious films and Star Trek Beyond, which is slated to open in movie theaters on July 22. He is also attached to an untitled Jeremy Renner/Bourne sequel and a Shaolin Temple remake.

What do you think? Is director Justin Lin the right man for the gig? What about LeBron James? Are you looking forward to the two of them teaming up for Space Jam 2?
