Karl Urban, Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson join Thor: Ragnarok

With the next Thor film set to open in just over a year, Marvel has announced some major additions to the cast list for Ragnarok.

The studio has confirmed that Jeff Goldblum (Independence Day, Jurassic Park) will play the eccentric Grandmaster (an Elder of the Universe), Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (Cinderella) will play the mysterious and powerful new villain Hela (aka the Asgardian goddess of death), Karl Urban (Dredd, Star Trek) will play Skurge (aka the Executioner, an evil Asgardian warrior), and Tessa Thompson (Creed) will play the classic hero Valkyrie (who is also a sometime love interest for Thor). They will, of course, join Mark Ruffalo in the extended cast, who is reprising his role as The Hulk/Bruce Banner for the sequel.

“The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet,” producer Kevin Feige said in a statement. “The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honor, and having all of them is incredible."

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) gets bigger and bigger, it’s amazing to see just the type of talent this world is able to attract. Also: How has it taken this long for Karl Urban to get a role in the MCU?

Thor: Ragnarok is set to open July 28, 2017.

What do you think of the casting additions? Are you looking forward to this one?
