Margot Robbie may star in Harley Quinn spinoff movie

She hasn't even made her debut in Suicide Squad yet, but Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn may get her own film.

Well, that's not exactly true: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Robbie would be just one of the stars of the picture, which would include a boatload of female superheroes and villains from the DC universe, including Batgirl and Birds of Prey, the female-centric team whose rotating roster has included Poison Ivy, former Batgirl Barbara Gordon in her "Oracle" identity, Black Canary, Hawkgirl, Katana and others (there was also a short-lived Birds of Prey TV series on The WB in 2002).

It's Robbie, apparently, who has spearheaded the project, finding an unidentified female writer to pen the script and bringing the idea to Warner Bros. If it goes forward, she will also be a producer on the film. Robbie reportedly wanted to create a movie based on DC's female roster after doing her research to play Harley and discovering the other characters that the comic book canon had to offer.

Harley, herself, of course, was created not for the comics but by Paul Dini as Joker's girlfriend for Batman: The Animated Series. She became so popular that she found her way into the comics and is now about to hit movie theaters when Suicide Squad opens on Aug. 5. She remains a fan favorite, and her books even apparently outsell those of DC icon Wonder Woman, whose own first theatrical film arrives early next year.

I imagine that the Quinn/Birds of Prey project will really pick up steam if Suicide Squad is a big hit and Robbie herself makes a strong impression with audiences, so stay tuned for more info. Does a DC movie based around some of its best female characters sound like a sure thing to you?
