Pacific Rim 2 still lives! Jurassic World writer brought on board

Things are going roundly for the eagerly anticipated sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi action movie Pacific Rim.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Derek Conolly -- the guy who co-wrote Jurassic World with director Colin Trevorrow -- has been tapped to write Pacific Rim 2, the robots (aka Jaegers) vs monsters (aka Kaijus) movie that will be helmed by Daredevil Season 1 showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Angel). Del Toro will still be involved, but as a producer.

It’s not yet clear if Conolly has been hired to do a script rewrite or if he’ll be developing story ideas for the movie. Drafts of the story have previously been worked on by del Toro, Zak Penn and Jon Spaiths and even though plot details have been kept quiet, seems that at one point the movie was to take place many years after the original, where the monster-fighting robot suits have become a common thing. Whether that's still the basic storyline remains to be seen.

Conolly's star as a screenwriter is currently on the rise with some high profile blockbuster movies in the works; and he's said to have impressed the Legendary Pictures execs with his screenplay for Kong: Skull Island, another monster-filled movie from the same studio that brought us Pacific Rim with Warner Bros. Pictures.

He also worked on Jurassic World 2, co-wrote DreamWork’s upcoming sci-fi drama Intelligent Life starring Lupita Nyong'o, and he'll also write a little movie set in a galaxy far, far away currently titled Star Wars: Episode IX with Colin Trevorrow. Not bad, eh?

With his impressive geek cred, do you guys think Derek Conolly is the right man for the job?
