Supernatural stars on how they'd like the series to (eventually) end

It’s hard to believe, but The CW’s Supernatural is gearing up for its 12th season — with no apparent end in sight. But how would the stars like to see it end once the screen finally fades to black?

Stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki chatted with Entertainment Weekly about how they’d like to see the show end once it eventually wraps up. For Ackles, he said he would like the writers to circle back to a storyline the show has tapped more than a few times: sacrifice. He said he always thought “Dean would make the ultimate sacrifice for his brother.” It’s not the most original ending, but it’s certainly true to the character.

Padalecki had a bit more to say on the topic, offering up a few different scenarios he thought could work for a series finale (assuming the show ever ends, of course):

“It’s changed a lot over time. Part of me, loving Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, always thought it’d be great to see the boys against insurmountable odds and to freeze-frame on them and just hear stuff in the background. You don’t know if they die, you don’t know if they live, but you know that they’re going to go out in a blaze of glory … I think that’d be a nice way to go out if we had to — watching the end of the world. Or looking up at us from the trunk and throwing the weapons in and saying we’ve got work to do. All of those kind of leave room for opinion and room for interpretation. I don’t think we should see the boys die or live, we should wonder.”

Regardless, Padalecki said “the boys can’t stop fighting.” After 11 seasons, that doesn’t seem to be much of a concern.

What do you think? How should it finally end?
